Fort Bliss is the second largest military base in the Army located between Texas and New Mexico. The airspace above Fort Bliss is the largest unrestricted space reserved for missile and artillery training and testing. Fort Bliss is home to the U.S. 1st Armored Division from Germany. The headquarters for the El Paso Intelligence Center are also located at Fort Bliss. Upon arrival in the area, Fort Bliss can be accessed off of Interstate 10 East to US 54 which leads to Cassidy gate at the entrance to the base. Fort Bliss has joined with Government Military Housing to develop and construct new family housing units on base. The total number of housing units at Fort Bliss is over 3,000 and, they are separated based on rank. If personnel are seeking off-post housing, the Community Home Finding, Relocation and Referral Services must be contacted prior to making any lease agreements. The housing office can help individuals determine what BAH rate they may be eligible for in their search for homes for rent or purchase. Temporary accommodations can be made at the Inn at Fort Bliss which offers over 150 guest rooms.
Children may stay free, and the facility does not allow pets.
Fort Bliss is home to three elementary schools and a high school. Students attending off-post schools will use bus transportation. All the schools in the Fort Bliss area are part of the El Paso Independent School District. The district is the largest in the Texas Education Agency’s Educational Center. Two child development centers are available at Fort Bliss, one in Building 1730 and the other in building 3500. The programs offered include weekly care, hourly care, school age care for children in 1st grade and older and family home child care. Family child care is designed to accommodate parents who work in the evening or on weekends when the center is no not open. Transportation is provided to certain programs that are held at off-post facilities.
